Pennsylvania unveils plans to clamp down on web-based gambling

Pennsylvania State Republican Mario Scavello has outlined plans that include punishments for people in the US state that participate in online gambling.

According to Fox News, although internet wagering remains illegal in Pennsylvania, the US state does not have any law in place to punish those that partake in online gambling activities.

Under a bill introduced by Scavello, first time offenders could face a possible fine of $300 and up to 90 days in jail.

A second violation could lead to a fine of $2,500 and up to one year in prison.

The introduction of the bill comes as the state is reportedly considering the potential of legalising online gambling in Pennsylvania.

Scavello, who is against any legalisation, said that the measures would help to protect vulnerable parties such as children and problem gamblers from the dangers of online gambling.

“Here again, online gambling is best described as the Wild West,” Scavello said.

“Online, there’s no one around to keep an eye on someone who doesn’t know when to stop. I believe that if you hit people in their wallets, we can start to crack down on the lawbreakers.”
