Swedish state-owned gaming operator Svenska Spel has refunded all bets on this year’s Melodiefestivalen, a contest to select the country’s entry for the Eurovision Song Contest, following concerns that the selection process for this year’s winner could be fixed.
The winner of the televised Melodiefestivalen is decided by votes from the viewing public, leading Sweden’s gambling regulator Lotteriinspektionen to express fears that offering odds on the competition could lead to people attempting to manipulate the outcome by betting on their selected participant, then voting for them in the poll.
