New Jersey casinos post net revenue loss in 2013 depite launch of online gambling

The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) has reported that the US state suffered a year-on-year drop in net revenue during the 12 months to December 31, 2013, despite the introduction of online gambling.

The regulatory body said net revenue for the year totalled $3 billion (€2.2 billion) in 2013, a drop of 4.8% on the $3.2 billion achieved in the previous year.

Online gambling, which became legal in the state on November 21, 2013, was responsible for just $1.4 million of net revenue.

The New Jersey DGE also reported that gross operating profit fell 34.7% from $360.2 million in the previous year to $235.4 million in the last 12 months.

Despite online gambling being unable to boost full-year figures due to its late introduction to the New Jersey gambling service, revenue generated from internet gaming did contribute to a positive fourth quarter performance.

The Division recorded net revenue of $657.6 million in the three months ended December 31, 2013, up 5.4% from $623.8 million in the previous year. Online gambling became regulated in the quarter and was able to slightly boost net revenue figures.

In addition, gross operating profit jumped 73.3% from a loss of £21.7 million in 2012 to a loss of $5.8 million in Q4 of 2013.

As reported by iGaming Business, the New Jersey DGE also said it has made a positive start to 2014 with online gambling gross win up 28% on a month-on-month basis during January 2014.
