Thai police shut down 391 World Cup betting sites, 58 arrested

Police in Thailand have shut down 391 foreign and local websites offering illegal betting on the 2014 Fifa World Cup national team football tournament and arrested 58 people in the process.

According to the News.AsiaOne.com website, Police Lt-General Anat Sirhiran said seven of those arrested are alleged bookmakers, 49 are punters and another two are bet couriers.

Sirhiran, who is in charge of the police office assigned to tackle illegal football gambling during the tournament, said the arrests of the 58 people had resulted in the seizure of THB41,430 (€957/$1,280) in cash and four bankbooks with deposits of THB99,530.

The Police Lt-General also confirmed 391 betting websites have been shut down and that police are monitoring and blocking all attempts to reopen the websites under new URLs.
