Alamo to replace Bernhard as Nevada Gaming Commission chairman

Alamo to replace Bernhard as Nevada Gaming Commission chairmanDr. Tony Alamo is set to take over as chairman of the Nevada Gaming Commission after current chief Pete Bernhard announced that he would not seek reappointment and would resign on June 30.

Bernhard was first appointed to the regulatory body in 2001 by then-Governor Kenny Guinn to replace Brian Sandoval, who at the time resigned his chairman seat to run for Nevada attorney general. Bernhard has remained on the board since then.

Current Governor Sandoval confirmed yesterday (Wednesday) that Alamo, who has been a board member since 2008, will take over from Bernhard, while former Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) general manager Pat Mulroy will replace Bernhard on the board.

Sandoval said: “I respect the decision of chairman Pete Bernhard to leave the Nevada Gaming Commission. Pete has served the commission with great distinction for over 12 years, and his unmatched knowledge and expertise will be sorely missed.”

Bernhard first informed Sandoval that he would not seek reappointment several months ago and also declined the Governor’s invitation to reconsider his decision.

Alamo, who operates Alamo Medical Clinic in Henderson, Nevada, joined the commissions in 2008 before being reappointed by Sandoval in 2012.

Before joining the commission six years ago, Alamo served first as a member then as chairman of the Nevada State Athletic Commission from 2001 until 2007.

“Tony’s background and experience chairing several state commissions will ensure a smooth transition for the Gaming Commission and its effective regulation of the gaming industry,” Sandoval said.

Mulroy, who will replace Bernhard on the Nevada Gaming Commission, will begin her term on July 1.

“Pat has shown exceptional leadership skills throughout her career, most recently in her capacity as general manager of the SNWA,” Sandoval said.
