Greek gambling company OPAP has been awarded the country’s sole horseracing betting licence by the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (HRADF) national privatisation company.
Yesterday (Tuesday), iGaming Business reported that the HRADF confirmed it had received bids from both OPAP and Greek-owned gaming and lottery provider Intralot.
The HRADF said in a statement that OPAP’s bid of €40.5 million ($52.1 million) was the highest offer and the firm has now been named as the ‘successful’ bidder in the tender.
The licence sale forms part of an agreed privatisation plan with Athens’ international lenders, the European Union and the International Monetary Fund, under a €240 billion bailout.
The HRADF scrapped an initial tender last month due to a lack of interest with bidders and launched a new tender this month.
Earlier in September, iGaming Business reported that OPAP had submitted an offer of €40 million for the licence, shortly after Intralot had an initial bid of around €5.2 million turned down.
OPAP’s bid was reportedly put forward in partnership with British fund manager Global Family Partners.
In addition to winning the Greek horseracing betting licence, which was previously run by ODIE, OPAP also holds a monopoly for the country’s lotteries and sports betting through approximately 5,000 outlets.
