New Jersey due in court for sports betting push

Attorneys representing New Jersey will today (Tuesday) return to court in the latest stage of the US state’s effort to legalise certain forms of sports betting.

New Jersey has been attempting to legalise sports betting activities for the last two-and-a-half years but has so far been blocked in its efforts by the courts.

Last year, the four major US sports leagues and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) successfully launched a legal challenge to block the regulation of sports wagering in the state.

The NFL American football, NBA basketball, NHL ice hockey and MLB baseball leagues have previously spoken of their opposition to such legalisation due to fears over the impact it could have on their respective competitions.

New Jersey attorneys, as well as representatives from the four leagues and the NCAA, will once again argue over the issue today before the third US Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia.

Despite previous opposition from the professional leagues, the commissioners of both the NBA and MLB have recently spoken out in support of widespread sports betting regulation in the US.
