The World Lottery Association and the European Lotteries have officially launched a new Sportradar-powered global lottery monitoring system (GLMS), to eliminate the threat of match-fixing and preserve the integrity of sports.
After years of development, the GLMS platform will provide WLA and EL members with extensive monitoring of the various betting markets offered by government-authorized lotteries and bookmakers.
The GLMS will utilize Sportradar’s technology to provide member lotteries with alerts, and a platform for users to communicate effectively about potentially suspicious matches.
“Both the EL and the WLA are absolutely committed to honest betting and sports integrity worldwide,” said European Lotteries president Friedrich Stickler. “We recognize the role we play in helping safeguard that spirit. The GLMS, powered by Sportradar, will give our members a unique, global view into betting behavior and irregular betting patterns.
Stickler said that monitoring constitutes a significant tool to detect fraud and manipulations and is a necessary step for the effective fight against match-fixing.
“I am confident that the GLMS will provide sport and society with a significant helping hand in keeping sport competitions safe and clean, taking the monitoring work onto a higher level,” he continued. “It is of great importance that two lotteries from Asia have joined the GLMS given the fact that Asia accounts for the biggest part of the global sports betting activity. I am excited that the EL and the WLA have taken this bold step to eliminate the threat of match-fixing and preserve the integrity of sports.”
WLA president Jean-Luc Moner-Banet said that the world lottery community was gaining momentum in its efforts to combat match-fixing and to preserve the integrity of sports.
“The launch of the GLMS is a testament to that fact,” he said. “Our cooperation with the EL in founding the GLMS, aided by the Sportradar’s state-of-the-art technology, will help us unite our member lotteries across five continents in the fight against fraud in sports.
“Through the GLMS we look forward to continuing our partnership with the IOC and FIFA, providing them with information on irregular betting patterns in accordance with our respective agreements. I would like to extend my warmest appreciation to all that have helped make the GLMS a reality, in particular Danske Spil who will host the operational headquarters of the GLMS.”
Sportradar CEO Carsten Koerl added: “Our Fraud Detection System has been relied upon by sports federations for over a decade now and has recently been used by law enforcement agencies to initiate or support criminal prosecutions, so I am delighted to see that as well as working with them, our system will now underpin the global lottery monitoring system.”
