Football Federation Australia (FFA) has reaffirmed the importance of football participants complying with the rules surrounding betting on football matches.
The national governing body’s statement comes after a registered participant in New South Wales breached a clause in the National Code of Conduct by betting on various matches in the A-League top-tier national club competition during 2014.
After being brought to the attention of the FFA by a betting agency under the terms of an integrity agreement, the participant in question was issued with a fine of Aus$1,000 (€687/US$774) that has been suspended subject to the participant ceasing the conduct.
In addition, during April of this year, three registered participants in Western Australia were sanctioned after betting on a PS4 National Premier Leagues match in the region.
In response to the recent activity, David Gallop, chief executive officer of the FFA, has spoken out about the importance of complying with rules, stating that some participants may not be aware of the prohibition on wagering.
“Under Fifa’s (football’s global governing body) statutes, registered players, coaches, referees and club officials are not allowed to bet on football matches anywhere,” Gallop said.
“The FFA National Code of Conduct reflects the FIFA statutes.
“The integrity of football matches at all levels is paramount. Betting on matches is a legal activity, but it must have the safeguards of thorough regulation.
“FFA is committed to ensuring its regulations are upheld as part of its overall integrity measures.”
