Australian operator Tabcorp has been named as the global gambling industry’s leader in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) for the 10th time in 11 years.
The DJSI ranks more than 1,000 companies in 17 different areas, taking into account economic, social, and environmental factors.
Tabcorp was awarded a 100% score in the ‘Promoting responsible gaming’ category, and the company also noted that, in contrast to offshore operators currently being investigated by an Australian online gaming review, it generated $459.6 million (€289.7 million/$324.3 million) in taxes and returned more than $770 million to its home nation’s racing industry in the 2015 financial year.
Tabcorp chief executive David Attenborough said: “Tabcorp has, over a long period, demonstrated its commitment to responsible gambling and sustainable business practices.
“This is particularly timely recognition, with the Federal Government this week announcing a review into the impact of illegal offshore wagering. Tabcorp has welcomed this review as we believe regulations need to be tightened in respect to unlicensed offshore operators.
“Wagering operators should be licensed in Australia in order to be able to take bets from Australian residents, both to protect consumers and to ensure local racing industries remain viable.
“Tabcorp also continues to advocate for a consistent approach across the country to online gambling, with rules which are enforced.
“We take our role as a trusted gambling operator seriously and will continue to invest in responsible and sustainable practices that benefit our customers and the broader Australian community.”
Other industry leaders according to the DJSI poll included vehicle manufacturer Volkswagen and financial group UBS.
