Amaya-owned PokerStars has broken a world record for the largest number of players to enter a poker tournament.
A total of 253,698 players registered to take part in the event, easily beating the previous record of 230,000 players set at the ‘100 Billion Hands Celebration’ in June 2013.
The event featured a buy-in of just one cent and offered a $100,000 (€89,000) purse as well as a first place prize of $10,000, which was won by a player from Austria.
The tournament, which was played under a ‘turbo’ format, marked the first in a series of micro stakes events from PokerStars, with the operator set to give away $250,000 in prizes during the 14-event festival.
PokerStars tried and failed to break the existing record in February 2014, falling short with a total of 211,619 players.
The world record is the latest boost for PokerStars, which, along with its sister brand Full Tilt, last week secured approval to begin operating in the US state of New Jersey.
