Birch hails positive start to Rank’s financial year

Henry Birch, the chief executive of the Rank Group, has hailed a positive start to the 2015-16 financial year after the gambling operator posted an 8% increase in like-for-like revenues for the 15-week period through to October 11, 2015.

Rank Group, which operates the Grosvenor Casinos and Mecca brands, said in an interim management statement that venues revenue growth had been driven by a combination of increased admissions, staking levels and an improved win margin.

Digital revenues in the 15-week period rose by 10%, with mobile accounting for over 50% of revenue in recent months. Grosvenor’s digital revenues increased by 56% in the period, driven by improvements in VIP management, continued growth in the customer base following cross-sell from venues and strong growth from mobile products.

London enjoyed strong growth in revenue, up 19%, in comparison with 6% in provincial areas.

In August, Birch set his sights on further growth after the gambling operator announced a “significant” improvement in its performance during the 12 months through to June 30, with full-year group revenue amounting to £738.3 million (€1 billion/$1.2 billion), up 4% on the £707.7 million posted during the previous 12 months.

“The group has had a good start to the financial year,” Birch said today (Thursday). “We are seeing a continued strong performance from our Grosvenor Casinos brand, particularly in its digital channel and London casinos, as well as an improving admissions trend in our Mecca venues combined with good growth in Mecca’s digital business.

“We continue to work on our five strategic priorities, particularly the development of our new digital platform which is on track to be launched in calendar Q1 2016 and we will provide a more detailed update at our forthcoming interim results in January 2016.”
