Optimal Payments investigating possible data theft

London-listed payment solutions provider Optimal Payments is investigating allegations that some of its customers’ personal details have fallen into the public domain.

The allegations relate to historical customers of Neteller and the recently-acquired Moneybookers business.

The company said Thursday that “it has been made aware that a small amount of customers’ personal data is in the public domain and it has been alleged that such data forms part of a more material amount of customers’ personal data also in the public domain”.

It acknowledges that it suffered from two data breaches in 2009 and 2010, both of which were notified at the time to the financial regulator and were the subject of independent forensic investigations.

“The report from the forensic investigator on the Neteller data breach contained no evidence to suggest that the breach was material,” the company said in a statement. “In addition, to the best of the company’s knowledge, no Neteller customers suffered any financial losses as a result of the breach. The report from the forensic investigator on the Moneybookers data breach was unable to conclude on whether the breach was material but to the best of the company’s knowledge, no Moneybookers’ customers suffered any financial losses as a result of the breach.”

Optimal Payments added that it has since made a number of improvements to its information security platforms and believes that the data in question relates to individuals who registered as customers prior to 2010.

As a result of the allegations, the company has commenced an investigation into the matter and notified both the Information Commissioner and the Financial Conduct Authority, and has said that it will make a further announcement in due course on the outcome of the investigation.
