Betway continues CD Leganés sponsorship

Betway has secured a sponsorship extension with CD Leganés which will see the gambling operator act as the main sponsor for the team during the upcoming season.

The agreement, which was initially signed in 2018, comes at a time when the Spanish Ministry of Consumer Affairs is considering proposals which will toughen up regulations on betting companies, including restrictions to sponsorship agreements and advertising exposure.

The partnership reportedly contains an exit clause which will be triggered if the Royal Decree comes into force next season.

Betway will remain as the front-of-shirt sponsor for the team, with the sponsorship valued at approximately one million euros each season when they were in La Liga Santander. The value is expected to differ following their relegation.

Leganés have secured a number of sponsorships despite their relegation. KFC will feature on the left sleeve, Ynsadiet Laboratories on the back and Dione ice cream on the left leg of the trousers.

In addition to Leganés, there are currently seven clubs in La Liga which feature a gambling company as a main shirt sponsor – Valencia, Alavés, Granada, Mallorca, Sevilla, Osasuna and Levante.

Under the new proposals to amend the Royal Decree, Spanish Minister of Consumer Affairs Alberto Garzón has altered the wording of the ruling to state that “sponsorship in sports T-shirts or equipment will not be admissible”, with gambling companies already banned from featuring on youth shirts.
