France’s igaming regulator ARJEL has confirmed that it is working towards including an amendment in the country’s draft digital law that would allow for dot fr poker sites to share player pools with sites licensed in other European markets.
The amendment, mentioned in last week’s iGB Diary, was first presented to French authorities at the end of January following meetings between ARJEL and French igaming stakeholders in December, but was rejected by Emmanuel Macron, France’s Minister for the Economy, Industry and Digital.
However, Macron added that he wanted to work on the issue: “We are currently working on it with ARJEL with a view (to including it in) to the draft digital law. It is in this perspective that we want to treat the subject,” he said at the time.
ARJEL for its part told Pokerstrategy.fr that “the opening up of French poker tables to European liquidities is once again on the cards. ARJEL will present a raft of measures among which will be this proposal as part of the upcoming draft of the digital law. With regard to timeframes, the consultation phase is over and the draft law is being developed”.
ARJEL presented a liquidity sharing amendment at the end of 2013 which was rejected by the authorities shortly after. This latest amendment has more chances of passing and should give the EU poker vertical something of a boost, but is not expected to be a miracle cure for the sector.
