Athletic Bilbao, which competes in LaLiga, the top division of Spanish football, has signed up Kirolbet as its first ever betting partner.
Signing up the Basque gaming and sports betting provider is consistent with the club’s traditional loyalty to its region. Since its formation, Bilbao has only ever played footballers who are from the Basque Country in northern Spain.
Despite this approach, the club’s commercial director, Jokin Garatea, said that several licensed operators had been considered for the contract during the tender phase.
Garatea added that Kirolbet, which operates in the Basque region, Catalunya, Navarra, Galicia, La Rioja and Castile y Leon was selected due to its dedication to developing football in the region.
The partnership will run for three years, from 2015-16 to 2017-18.
“Kirolbet will become one of the most important sponsors within the structure of Athletic,” Garatea said.
“The club’s management is looking forward to working with Kirolbet on marketing and social initiatives.”
Kirolbet branding will appear in the club’s San Mames stadium and on Bilbao’s digital platforms.
Last month, Kirolbet became a sponsor of Spanish basketball club Saski-Baskonia for three seasons, from 2015-16 to 2017-18.
