Netflix’s hit comedy-drama series Orange is the New Black is to be the latest branded slot to be rolled out by International Game Technology (IGT) after the supplier struck a deal with production company Lionsgate to develop land-based and interactive slots based on the TV programme.
Set in a woman’s prison and based on memoirist Piper Kerman’s time in jail on a drug smuggling charge, three series of Orange is the New Black have aired on streaming service Netflix. The programme has been a critical hit, winning a variety of awards for acting, writing and direction.
It will now become a major new slot released by IGT, with a free-to-play version available for mobile and desktop via IGT’s DoubleDown Casino, as well as two land-based casino variants.
The launch shows DoubleDown’s increasing importance, with the game’s roll-out the first time a “marquee licensed brand” has gone live on the app concurrently with the debut of the casino versions.

“Each of the games captures the essence of this blockbuster series in unique ways that fans will appreciate, and the launch of the DoubleDown Casino social version is designed to reach the massive fan base that watches the show on desktop and mobile devices.”
Lionsgate president of interactive ventures and games Peter Levin said he was thrilled to have partnered IGT to expand the world of Orange is the New Black in “exciting new directions.”
“By extending Orange is the New Black into IGT slots for casinos, desktop and mobile, we’re providing millions of existing fans with fun, interactive new ways to enjoy the show while introducing its unique mix of drama, excitement and humor to a whole new audience,” he explained.
The game prominently features Piper Chapman, the character inspired by Kerman’s memoir and the series’ lead character, as well as using other imagery and music from the show.
It is set on a five-reel, thirty-payline configuration and comes with a free spins feature offering up to 15 free spins with the opportunity to receive a multiplier of up to ten times the original stake.
The land-based variant will be available on IGT’s Centre Stage Duo cabinets, offering one of three multi-level progressive prizes. It uses a totally new math model in a 4×5 reel configuration, as well as bonuses based on some of the show’s most popular characters.
