Sportradar partners NHL and Philippine Basketball Association

Sports data solutions provider Sportradar continues to strengthen its range of partners, striking a deal to distribute data gathered on the US National Hockey League (NHL) and the Philippine Basketball Association.

Sportradar becomes the NHL’s exclusive third-party provider of real-time game data, with the multi-year agreement beginning at the start of the 2015-16 season which kicks off later this week (October 7th).

It will provide real-time play-by-play and game statistics via the league’s proprietary Hockey Information Tracking System (HITS) to media and technology companies worldwide. This solution provides in-game data such as time on ice, face-offs won or lost, shots on goal, missed shots, shot types and a host of other data.

“This partnership with Sportradar advances our commitment to statistics as a storytelling tool,” NHL executive vice president of digital media and strategic planning Stephen McArdle said. “We recognize that innovative technology helps bring game statistics to life and showcases the extraordinary talent in the NHL.”

“The NHL’s rich content is a tremendous addition to the Sportradar portfolio,” Sportradar US chief commercial officer Steve Byrd said. “Not only will we provide the fastest NHL data directly from the rink, but our development team will use this data within a dynamic new suite of visual products and applications that will enhance the hockey experience for fans.”

“NHL content is a true international asset,” Sportradar Global managing director Ulrich Harmuth added. “We will bring this comprehensive data to customers across the globe, including hockey relevant markets like Scandinavia, Russia and Eastern Europe.”

The company’s second partnership with the PBA sees it become the sport’s official data partner until the end of the 2020-21 season. Sportradar will collect, sell and distribute live scores, stats and other data exclusively to gaming companies, and on a non-exclusive basis to media outlets.

The deal covers all three of the PBA’s main tournaments; the PBA Philippine Cup, the PBA Commissioner’s Cup and the PBA Governor’s Cup, as well as the PBA D-League, PBA All-Star Game, and all pre- and post-season matches.

Sportradar will also work on developing an official PBA mobile app to provide fans with live data and data visualisation tools.

“Our league is always looking for ways to serve our fans and create new ones,” said PBA president Atty Chito Salud. “This partnership with Sportradar will provide PBA fans around the world instant access to PBA scores and statistics including through the official PBA Mobile App. We are excited to see what the next six years will bring.”

Sportradar’s managing director of sports data and licensing Dr Johannes Ranke said that the company was hugely encouraged by the “exciting and innovative” partnerships it has sealed in the Asian region in recent months.

“[With] the PBA, as the second oldest basketball league in the world, we have some exciting projects ahead of us,” he said. “The passion of the people in Philippines for their basketball is staggering and invigorating and we are confident that the services and products we will develop with the PBA will stoke that passion and take the league and the sport’s engagement to the next level.”
