Pennsylvania set to vote on internet gambling

A Pennsylvania House Committee is today (Wednesday) set to vote on legislation that could eventually lead to regulation of online gaming activities in the US state.

As reported by iGaming Business, a number of bills have been put forward in the state this year in an effort to legalise some forms of internet gambling.

The Committee will today discuss Bill HB9, introduced by State Representative John Payne in order to push for the legalisation of online gambling to existing licence holders in the state.

If passed, the bill would set out a similar regulatory framework as in New Jersey, which first introduced online gaming in late 2013.

However, despite the bill having gained support in Pennsylvania, the Coalition to Stop Internet Gambling, an organisation headed up by Las Vegas Sands chairman Sheldon Adelson, has aired its strong opposition to the bill.

“In today’s polarised political climate, three-quarters of people rarely agree on anything, but on internet gambling, the Commonwealth’s voters felt strongly and are united – they are deeply opposed to legalising internet gambling,” Adelson’s organisation said in a statement.

The meeting comes at a busy time for the Pennsylvania gambling market, which last week also saw the introduction of a bill aimed at legalising sports betting in the state.
