Denmark hit by lowest-ever online poker quarterly result

Danish gambling regulator Spillemyndigheden has revealed the domestic online poker market recorded its worst-ever quarterly performance during the three months to September 30.

Gross gaming revenue (GGR) generated by online poker in the third quarter of this year amounted to DDK35 million (€4.7 million/$5 million), the lowest total since it was legalised in the country.

Online casino GGR came in at DDK335 million for the three-month period, a total that represents 64.5% of the overall betting market in Denmark, but also a result that is lower than the amount generated in the opening two quarters of this year.

Gaming machines remain the main source of income for the Danish online casino market with a 70% share, ahead of poker, blackjack and roulette.

Land-based casinos had a relatively successful quarter after generating DDK95 million in GGR, the same amount as last year, although the amount collected by gaming machines in this sector was DDK370 million, the lowest total since Q1 last year.

Overall GGR for the quarter amounted to DDK910 million, which is up 7% from the DDK890 million collected in the corresponding period last year, but down on the amount generated in the first and second quarter of this year.

Based on the third-quarter performance, Spillemyndigheden expects GGR for the full-year to amount to DDK8.85 billion, compared to DDK8.36 billion at the end of 2015.
