The Switzerland National Council (Bundesrat) has announced that casinos in the country will be permitted to reopen from 6 June, after the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic saw them shut for more than two months.
Swiss casinos have been closed since 17 March as part of a nationwide lockdown to slow the spread of Covid-19, but with the situation improving, casinos can reopen from Saturday this week.
Casinos are among a host of venues that will be permitted to resume operations from 6 June, with amusement parks, zoos, swimming pools and wellness facilities also set to reopen.
The Bundesrat also said gatherings of up to 300 people, including sports events, will be allowed from Saturday, while contact training for sports will be permitted. Professional sports are able to resume in Switzerland from 8 June.
Measures will be reviewed again by 24 June, with the Bundesrat set to further ease restrictions and permit gatherings of up to 1,000 people. However, it said events with over 1,000 people would remain prohibited until at least 31 August.
Confirmation of the reopen date comes after the French government announced that casinos in the country would be able to resume operations from today (2 June).
Casinos in ‘green zones’ – administrative departments where risk of transmission is low – will be permitted to reopen, while those in the ‘orange zone’ (where there is a higher risk of transmission) must remain closed.
Dutch casinos are set to reopen on 1 July, while those in Bulgaria reopened on 30 May and in Austria on 29 May.
