The National Crime Agency (NCA) has confirmed that two men suspected of involvement in match-fixing in English football have been charged.
In a statement, the NCA said the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service’s Organised Crime Division found ‘sufficient evidence’ and was satisfied that it was ‘in the public interest’ to authorise charges of conspiracy to defraud.
Singapore national, Chann Sankaran, 33, and Krishna Sanjey Ganeshan, a 43-year-old with dual UK and Singapore nationality, have been remanded in custody.
Both men are alleged to be members of a suspected international illegal betting syndicate based in Singapore.
Yesterday iGaming Business reported that the NCA had arrested six people in connection with the syndicate, which has been accused of fixing games in the English lower leagues.
A seventh man has since been arrested, who has been bailed along with four others pending further enquiries.
Sankaran and Ganeshan are being charged with conspiracy to defraud, contrary to common law, between November 1-26, 2013 in the city of Manchester with each other and others to ‘defraud bookmakers by influencing the course of football matches and placing bets thereon’.
The maximum sentence for this offence is 10 years’ imprisonment. The NCA’s investigation continues.
