PlayFab closes $2.5m seed round

PlayFab, a cloud-based provider of tools and services for building and managing online games, has announced the closure of a $2.5 million (€1.9 million) seed round.

The financing coincides with the commercial launch of the firm’s full solution, which it said would allow customers to focus on creating games.

James Gwertzman, founder and chief executive officer of PlayFab, said: “The game industry is going through a radical transformation, from packaged games to ‘games as a service,’ but so far this revolution has been led by technology-heavy companies focused more on monetisation and acquisition than fun.

“Our mission is to raise the bar by arming the most creative game talent with state-of-the-art technologies and tools.”

The new service launch has also been bolstered by an exclusive deal with Exit Games.

Under the agreement, PlayFab customers will have full access to the entire suite of Photon Server products for no extra charge.

The Photon Server products, which are currently used by more than 80,000 game developers around the world, will be integrated with the PlayFab service in the coming months.
