Serie A clubs face betting investigation

Italian Serie A top-tier football clubs Lazio and Sassuolo are to be investigated as part of an ongoing betting probe in the country.

According to various media reports, although authorities in Cesena have been investigating betting on football in the country for a number of years, new evidence has recently been put forward.

Reports suggest that one or more of Sassuolo’s games are being investigated while some fixtures being examined date back as far as 2007.

Investigators have analysed 200 devices including computers, smartphones and tablets in an effort to locate certain key words that flag up potential discussions about matches.

A number of players including Lazio captain Stefano Mauri have refused to give authorities their pin numbers to examine their phones, according to reports.
