The upcoming 2015 Rugby World Cup in England is set to become the biggest betting event in the history of rugby union, according to a report in the UK’s Daily Mail newspaper.
Bookmakers have predicted that more than £60m (€81.6m/$92.6m) will be wagered on the tournament, which will begin on September 18.
Defending champion New Zealand is the favourite with the bookmakers, followed by host England.
New Zealand’s 8-7 victory over France in the final of the 2011 Rugby World Cup final led to Irish bookmaker Paddy Power paying out £500,000, the newspaper added.
Australia is the third favourite for the tournament, followed by France, while the USA is the rank outsider with odds as wide as 3,000-1.
