DraftKings to delay UK launch until next year

Daily fantasy sports (DFS) operator DraftKings has announced that it is to delay its launch in the UK until “early next year”.

DraftKings in August secured a licence to operate in the UK market, with the aim of going live by October, although the launch date was later changed to before the end of the year.

However, company spokeswoman Pippa Hancock has now said in an email to Bloomberg that the launch is to be delayed until “early next year”, but did not disclose the reasons behind this decision.

Despite the company’s decision not to air details of the delay, the Boston Globe newspaper quotes a DraftKings executive as saying that the brand will go live in the UK once some “minor issues are resolved”.

DraftKings has come under fire in its native US in recent months after it was alleged that one of its employees was able to win a major prize on rival website FanDuel.

The incident has led to mass fallout within the US fantasy sports sector, with a number of states moving to ban DFS activities, placing the future of the market in doubt.
