Swedish online gambling market expands in first nine months

Swedish regulator Lotteriinspektionen has revealed revenue from the country’s gambling market increased by 5% year-on-year during the first nine months of 2016.

Total gambling revenue in the three-quarter period amounted to SEK16.2 billion (€1.6 billion/$1.8 billion).

The Svenska Spel monopoly posted flat revenue of SEK6.5 billion and revenue from online gambling climbed by 12% year-on-year to SEK1.38 billion, but land-based revenue dropped 3% to SEK5.17 billion.

State-owned Svenska Spel was responsible for 40% of total revenue during the first nine months, while the regulator estimated that internationally licensed online operators generated SEK3.66 billion in revenue, up 16% from last year and representing 23% of total revenue.

ATG was second to Svenska Spel in terms of the amount of revenue collected in the three quarters, with the company responsible for 40% of overall revenue, while the Swedish Postkodföreningen saw sales increase by 8%.
